Yury Bubnou is a professor. He was accused of slandering Lukashenka under Article 367 of the Criminal Code (Defamation against the President of Belarus).
He was arrested on January 12, 2023, at his university department.
Yury Bubnou has headed the Humanities Department at the Belarusian State University of Food and Chemical Technologies since 1997. His portrait is on the university veterans' honor board. He was awarded the Outstanding Educationist badge. He is known in Mahilioŭ as an expert sociologist and a co-creator of the Center for Urban Initiatives and the DranikFest festival.
Yury Bubnou was also charged under Article 368 of the Criminal Code (Contempt of the President of Belarus). His trial was scheduled on May 4, 2023, in the Kastryčnicki District Court of Mahilioŭ, by Judge Volha Zarychniuk.
On May 26, 2023, the political prisoner was sentenced to 24 months of imprisonment in a general-security penal colony.
