Yauhen Kurhanau was detained as part of a case of "mass riots" (Article 293 of the Criminal Code). His apartment was searched. Yauhen was then charged with participating in riots (Part 2) over a protest in August 2020. The charge was later requalified under Art. 342.

On March 23, 2021, the Zavodski District Court of Minsk sentenced Kurhanau to two years in a general-security penal colony, despite the defendant's disability.

Yauhen served his sentence and was released on June 18, 2022.
