Dzmitryi Kaneuski was sentenced to 3 years in a penal colony for comment on the Internet.
He was accused of “deliberate actions aimed at inciting racial, religious, social and other hatred” (Article 130 of the Criminal Code). The whole accusation was based on one comment in the Telegram chat “Homieĺ Saviecki 97.” In a comment, Dzmitryi wrote that his colleague Anton Martsinkevich had been killed by riot police, and called for violence against police officers.
On June 17, 2021, Judge Ruslan Tsaruk sentenced Dzmitryi to three years of imprisonment.
Dzmitryi served his sentence in full and was released from prison in October 2023.
Dzmitryi is the son of a public activist from Homieĺ Tatsiana Kaneuskaya, who is behind bars due to political persecution. His older brother Aliaksandr was sent to prison for 15 days under Part 2 of Article 19.11 of the Code of Administrative Violations of the Republic of Belarus.
