Statement on the status of a political prisoner
Dzianis Maksimau was arrested in Minsk for posting comments concerning the deaths of the IT worker Andrei Zeltser and the KGB agent Dzmitry Fedasiuk.
He was charged with ‘contempt of a government official’ and ‘incitement of social hatred’ under Articles 369 and 130 of the Criminal Code.
On October 26, 2022, the Minsk City Court sentenced the political prisoner to 24 months of imprisonment in a general-security penal colony and a fine of 6,400 Belarusian rubles ($2,530).
In November 2022, the KGB added Dzianis Maksimau to the 'List of persons involved in terrorist activities'.
In December 2022, the political prisoner was transferred from remand prison #8 in Žodzina (Minsk region) to penal colony #2 in Babrujsk (Mahilioŭ region).
Dzianis Maksimau served his full sentence and was released on March 11, 2023.
