Andrey Dzmitryeu was a 2020 presidential candidate. He was arrested under a criminal case. The Investigative Committee reported the politician to have traveled abroad too often.

He has three children.

Dzmitryeu is a co-founder and co-chairman of the Havary Praudu! (Speak the Truth!) civil campaign and association. In 2021, their offices were searched, after which the organization's bank accounts were blocked. On August 12, 2021, Dzmitryeu was detained for a short time, but later he was released.

On January 11, 2023, Dzmitryeu was re-arrested. The Investigative Committee reported that Dzmitryeu allegedly participated in the 2020 post-election protest actions, therefore he became a suspect under Part 1 of Article 342 of the Criminal Code (Organisation of and participation in actions grossly disrupting public order). Besides, the Committee informed that the politician "crossed the state border of Belarus 599 times, with 33 of them after 2020. The investigation assumes that Dzmitryeu's contacts with representatives of the West and the USA may indicate the coordination of his "political" activities from abroad".

On April 5, 2023, the Maskoŭsk District Court of Minsk began the trial of the case against Andrey Dzmitryeu. The State Prosecution requested two years in prison for him. On April 6, 2023, Judge Katsiaryna Murashka sentenced the politician to 18 months of imprisonment in a general-security penal colony.

On May 3, 2023, Andrey Dzmitryeu's mother died.

On June 23, 2023, the Minsk City Court considered the appeal filed by the political prisoner. Judge Anzhela Kastsiukevich upheld the verdict and dismissed the appeal.

On June 28, 2023, Andrey Dzmitryeu began serving his sentence in penal colony #3 in Vićba, Viciebsk region.

Andrey Dzmitryeu was a political prisoner in 2010 when heading Uladzimir Niakliayeu's presidential election team. Dzmitryeu was arrested on December 19, 2010, and placed in the KGB remand prison. On January 3, 2011, he was released on recognizance. He was accused of 'organizing riots' and later of 'organizing actions grossly disrupting public order or participating in them'. On May 20, 2011, in the Frunzienski District Court of Minsk, Judge Zhanna Zhukouskaya sentenced him to 24 months of probation imprisonment.
