Aliaksandr Rayentau was first violently detained on August 29, 2020, in a trolleybus together with his sister Natallia. Video footage of the detention was published online. Rayentau was sentenced to a short prison term, while his sister faced criminal charges.
Rayentau was detained in a criminal case in early December.
He was charged under Art. 342 of the Criminal Code ('Active participation in actions grossly violate public order') and Part 2 of Art. 363 (Resisting a law enforcement officer) of the Criminal Code.
On May 17, 2021, Judge Andrei Mlechka of the Frunzienski District Court of Minsk sentenced Rayentau to five years of imprisonment in a general-security penal colony.
In June 2022, it became known that the administration of penal colony #22 placed Rayentau in a cell and deprived him of meetings and phone calls.
In early January 2023, information appeared that the regime for Rayentau was enhanced—he was transferred to prison #8 in Žodzina.
