Statement on the status of a political prisoner
Aliaksandr Kurhanski was detained on September 30, 2021, for online comments after the deaths of IT worker Andrei Zeltser and KGB officer Dzmitry Fedasiuk. He was charged under Art. 130 (incitement of social hatred) and Art. 369 of the Criminal Code (insulting a representative of the authorities).
On June 28, 2022, the KGB put Aliaksandr on the list of persons involved in terrorist activities.
On August 12, 2022, the political prisoner was sentenced to 18 months of imprisonment in a general-security penal colony and ordered a fine of 1,600 Belarusian rubles (equivalent to 635 US dollars).
On October 17, 2022, the political prisoner served his sentence in full and was released.
