Aliaksandr Koval was sentenced to two years and six months of imprisonment in a general-security penal colony under Part 1 of Article 361-4 of the Criminal Code (promotion of extremist activities). He was sentenced by the Brest Regional Court on September 12, 2023. The verdict was announced by Katsiaryna Hruda.

Koval was arrested at the border on May 28, 2023. He was returning from a competition in Slovakia, and upon entering Belarus, Koval was asked to check his phone. The man himself gave the phone and its password to the law enforcers. During the inspection, they found "forbidden" data, according to Belarusian law enforcement officials. Since that day, Koval has been in custody.

At the trial Koval faced charges of sending a video to the Telegram bot "Nexta Editorial Office" on March 27, 2022. The video showed the movement of military equipment on the Minsk ring road. According to the prosecutor's version, Koval committed a crime because the Belarusian authorities consider Nexta an "extremist group".
