Yury Chubanau was convicted under five articles of the Criminal Code: part 3 of article 203-1 (illegal actions concerning personal data), article 369 (insulting a public officer), article 368 part 1 (insulting the president), article 370 (desecrating state symbols) and article 367 part 1 (slandering the president) to two years of imprisonment.

According to human rights defenders, Yury was convicted, among other things, for likes and comments under photos, posts and videos on social media.

He was released in early April 2024.
